Potlotek C@p Site

The Community Access Program was developed by Industry Canada in 1995 to help communities in rural and remote settings obtain affordable public access to the Internet and the skills to use it effectively. This was done through the establishment of community-based public Internet access facilities.

In 1998, federal and provincial governments partnered to offer what is now the Community Access Program Newfoundland and Labrador. Today, the Department of Education administers nearly 170 C@P sites.

In communities large and small, people young and old visit their local school, library or community centre to log on, and get connected. They can access cutting-edge technology, training courses and multimedia services or investigate business opportunities. Staff at each C@P Site provides helpful assistance and guidance, as clients seek opportunities for growth in the comfort of their own community.

C@P is not just about computers and the Internet, however. It's about people and communities across the province and the country having the same opportunities to learn new skills and explore the world. Geographical boundaries disappear at a C@P Site, providing a window on the virtual world.

You don't need a membership. You don't need superior skills. You need a desire to be engaged.
We invite everyone to drop by their local C@P Site, and make a connection!

The Community Access Program itself has been a part of our rural Richmond County Communities since 1996 and currently 10 C@P sites are located in the communities of Arichat, Chapel Island, D’Escousse, Evanston, Johnstown, L’Ardoise, Petit de Grat, River Bourgeois and St. Peters. The tenth site is situated in the Eastern Counties Regional Library located in Petit de Grat. The C@P program is unique in Richmond County as it serves the Anglophone, Acadian and Mi’kmaw communities.

We have recently moved into our new building and fully upgraded our new office. We are now located next to the Mikmawey school so that students can get better access to our site . We have furnished our site with 10 work stations and new equipment The Chapel Island Band Council provides employment for summer students and seasonal workers. Also, from the First Nations Help Desk, we have managed to hire students.
